Global Service update 1st July 2 ...

Update to French Import Processing:

In recent times, we have seen many changes in Customs regulations throughout the world, and now we wish to make you aware of another one.

On 1st January 2022, important changes came into effect in the French Value Added Tax (VAT) regime, which impacted businesses importing goods from Rest of World (Non-European Union* Countries) to France:

Key Changes:

Import VAT for shipments into France was no longer collected by the French Customs Authorities (upon Import Clearance).

Import VAT was automatically accounted for under the Importer’s (Importer of Record) French VAT number via the compulsory reverse-charge mechanism.

This means that companies acting as Importer of Record in France will require a valid French VAT number.

In a case where a non-EU Business Shipper wants to act as Importer, a valid French VAT number is required, and a Fiscal Representative must be appointed to comply with its VAT obligations.

French customs have been phasing this process into effect since January 1st however this is now implemented with full effect. If consignments are sent without showing the full VAT registered EU EORI number, they will be automatically returned at your cost. Please be aware UCS site HAWB.com requests EORI but does not insist and will not allow you to complete booking without providing receiver EORI. This is because this only relates to business addresses and not residential. We can also not check the validity of the provided EORI so please ensure information is correct.

In addition, we also share with you with useful external links, which can help you determine the steps needed to make sure your business is ready to comply with the changes in the French VAT regime.
